It was another day’s walk to leave Obera, and I was glad to see the back of it.

The next task was finding something to eat. We were in no-man’s land between Obera and Sastril. It was a rocky landscape, with nothing but a few inedible shrubs to break up the monotony of gray rock. Fatigue was beginning to set in, and if I didn’t get a drink soon, I’d collapse.

“You’ve travelled this place, right?” Azar panted. “You could point us in the direction of the nearest steak, couldn’t you?”

I laughed, though there wasn’t much humor in it. “This place barely supports plant life. Very little plant life means fewer animals. We’re not going to eat until we reach Sastril tonight.”

“I’m starved. Do we have any more of the broth?”

I shook my head. “We ate it last night, remember?”

“Right. Sorry, it’s hard to remember. All the rock seems to blend together.”

I glanced at my companion, worried. He didn’t look sunstruck, but that didn’t mean anything. I would have thought a native desert dweller would have a better tolerance for the heat. Apparently, I was wrong. Azar kept licking his lips; his eyes were dazed and unfocused, and beneath the smattering of red scales he looked pale. I put an arm out to stop him and he took three steps in place before realizing what I’d done.

“Azar, bend down for me, will you? I need to check something.”

Azar blinked a few times before slowly bowing his head toward me. I pressed the back of my hand to his brow. It was sweaty, but it also felt too cold. Clammy, even. Every time I’d touched him in the past, he’d blazed with heat. Something was very wrong if he was cool to my touch.

“You’re cold,” I murmured. “Azar, how long have you been feeling this way?”

“Since the canyons,” he admitted. “I’m not sure that the broth agreed with me. My head is aching.”

I cursed. I steered him into the shadow of the nearest rock and ordered him to sit. He flopped onto the ground with a groan. I had to get water into him, as soon as I possibly could. But where was I going to find it? The nearest well would be a day’s walk away, and I couldn’t leave him here. He’d die long before I could return. I craned my head to look at the sky. It was a merciless blue, without a cloud in sight.

“You should leave me,” Azar whispered. “No reason for both of us to die.”

“I’m not leaving you.” The reply was instantaneous and unthinking. No matter how many times I tried to tell myself I didn’t feel anything toward Azar, reality always had a way of proving me wrong. I couldn’t leave him alone. I couldn’t let him die. To do so would kill a part of me. A part of me that hadn’t felt anything since Rowe had left.

“One of us needs to survive,” he insisted. “It should be you. You’re a better person than me.
